After sweatpants caused a clog over the holidays in Mission, the city reminds residents what to flush Bathroom Wet Wipes

A pair of sweatpants caused a major clog in Mission’s sewers over the holidays and the city says the clothing was likely flushed down the toilet.

Crews were quick to repair the damage and remove the travelling pants. In a news release, the city says the only things that should be flushed down a toilet are toilet paper, poo, and pee.

However, Mission drains have been flush with incompatible items over the years. Public Works has unclogged a variety of items including food wrappers, dental floss, diapers, sanitary products, baby wipes, food scraps, as well as fat, oil, and grease.

“Our collection system, pipes, and wastewater treatment plant run best when processing what they are intended for,” said Utilities operations manager Colin McLean. “This is a friendly reminder to stay sewer savvy for the good of our system. This will ensure everyone in the community continues to receive optimal sewer service at all times.”

The city says to place unflushable items in the appropriate bin in recycling, garbage or compost. Unflushable items include: sweatpants, baby wipes , “flushable” wipes, feminine hygiene products, bandages and wrappers, condoms and wrappers, cotton balls, swabs and Q-tips, dental floss, hair, diapers, facial tissue, hypodermic needles, medications, vitamins, supplements, cat litter, chemicals and solvents, cigarette butts, food scraps, coffee grounds, disposable duster heads, fruit stickers, fats, oil, grease, paint and paper towels.
